Hello Savory families!

You are overdue a newsletter, full of all the wonderful and exciting goings on here at Savory. I will send it out on Friday so please keep an eye out for it and get ready with a cup of tea because it is going to be a long one! Until then, there are three important items you must know!

First, tomorrow is the Savory Elementary Terry Fox run! Each year, schools across Canada and around the world, participate in this annual event to raise funds for pediatric cancer research. Terry Fox grew up in Port Coquitlam, just outside Vancouver, so it always feels extra special to keep his dream alive here in BC. If your family can spare it, please send a ‘Toonie for Terry’ with your student tomorrow. We will send a cheque to the Terry Fox Foundation on behalf of our school with the proceeds. For more information on Terry Fox please visit https://terryfox.org/

Secondly, the ever-popular Friday Market is back starting this Friday, September 26th. For those of you new to Savory, our school district works with the incredible Flourish! School Food Society. Flourish provides hot meals and fresh fruits and vegetables for students through our lunch program with no cost to families. They are also committed to food sustainability and supporting the families of our students by sharing donations and groceries through a market style event. You may have seen their market here at Savory over the summer where fresh foods and baked goods were available to pick up at no cost. The Friday Market is the same idea. Flourish delivers the food to the school and we will open the doors to families to bring a shopping bag and take-home good food.

If your family could use support with food for your children while at school, please reach out to me at cdeichmann@sd62.bc.ca or by phone. We can work together to ensure everyone has enough to eat during the school week.
We ask the following of those participating in the Friday Market:
·       Please wait outside until staff welcome you in at 2:30.
·       Bring your own shopping bags to carry your items home in.
·       Shoppers must stay in a single file line; there is no moving ahead of other shoppers. We want to ensure everyone has enough time see what is available and take what their family needs without feeling pressured.
·       Children must be with an adult to participate. They are not welcome to help themselves to items while unsupervised or out of the line.

Lastly, we are looking forward to welcoming you all to our Meet the Staff evening tomorrow night! Our PAC is putting on a free BBQ and families are encouraged to connect and reacquaint yourselves with the school and your community. The BBQ will start at 5:00. There will be hot dogs, burgers, popcorn, and a limited number of Spinnakers sodas. You are invited to bring a blanket or lawn chair and make it a picnic! If you are able to volunteer at the event, your help is always appreciated. Please [There%20will%20be%20hot%20dogs,%20burgers,%20popcorn,%20and%20a%20limited%20number%20of%20Spinnakers%20sodas.]sign up here.
At 6:00 we will open the doors to the classrooms where teachers will meet you and give your students a chance to show off their space for this year. Please note, there will be many families here eager to meet the staff that work with their children so please refrain from asking questions about how your child is doing academically. This is simply an opportunity to meet the staff and make connections. If you have questions about your child’s progress so far, you can send an email to the teacher to book an appointment and find out more. Thank you for helping make sure there is time for everyone to have a chance to introduce themselves!

That’s it for now – more to come on Friday! I hope to see many of you tomorrow night!
Sincerely,
Ceilidh

September 5, 2025

Dear Savory Families,
We have had a fabulous week kicking off the 2025-2026 school year! Students have been happy to
reunite with friends and get back into routine, and the staff have been excited to spend time with
returning students and meet new ones.

Personally, this week has been very special for me. I have felt welcomed, supported and
encouraged by the community at Savory. It is clear that I have landed in a joyful and caring school
where the students’ wellbeing and education are everyone’s main priority. It is going to be an
outstanding year!

Plan for tomorrow
Students will move to their new classes tomorrow. At the end of the day, teachers will dismiss
students from the field where we will be lined up in our Fire Drill muster spots. Hopefully, this will
make the end of day pick-up smooth as the students will be exiting from new doors and you may
not have known where to locate them. If you already have a pick-up plan in place with your child,
we will encourage students to communicate that plan to their new teacher so that they can follow
it at the end of the day. For example, if your child meets you at the loop in your car, they will be
able to leave the line to meet you in the loop. This option is simply to ensure students are in one
place to prevent any worry over not being able to find them at their new exit.

Updates:
Change to boundaries at playtimes
We have created a few new boundaries for students at breaktimes that ensure students are not
playing at the front of the school during the school day. We reviewed these changes with students
at an assembly today and they demonstrated their understanding by sticking within the new
boundaries at an extra recess this afternoon. It was brilliant!

Reminders:
• Please make sure that you visit the Consent link to update your child’s permissions.
• Please also take time to review the Sooke School District Elementary School Code of
Conduct with your child. We will not be completing a signed form this year however, we
will review the District Code of Conduct with students over the course of the year. You will
notice that this document also refers to the expectations around personal devices. At the
Elementary school level, the devices we see most often are smart watches. Students will be
asked to keep their smart watch in their backpack, along with any other personal devices,
during the school day. If at any time you need to connect with your child, please contact
the school office and we will ensure that your child gets the necessary information. As the
main safety provider during the day, it is important that we are in the loop to prevent any
surprises.

Thank you for your warm welcome and for sharing your children with us. I am so impressed with
this community of students that know how being respectful, kind and safe creates an environment
where everyone can thrive.

Sincerely,
Ceilidh Deichmann

Good morning all,

Family Food Markets –

I am so excited to share that there will be Family Food Markets provided by Flourish Foods during the summer time.

Flourish is excited to invite families to participate in our weekly food markets! Flourish will arrive at set locations (see attached poster) with fresh food offerings for families to take home and enjoy. These will be locally gleaned foods from our friends at the Mustard Seed; think carrots, lettuce, potatoes, berries, bread and more!

Families will be invited to try out new recipes at home using the provided foods to help Flourish build recipes and lesson plans for the following school year. Feedback gathered from families who choose to participate will be crucial to building connections gardens and food systems in school. We really hope to see you there!

Please see attached poster for dates and times.
